1-0
Everton vs Manchester United
The Match
Perhaps not the most exciting FA Cup final ever, although Everton fans will argue otherwise, this fixture was the 50th FA Cup final hosted at Wembley since World War II. Paul Rideout’s solitary goal in the 30th minute gave Everton a memorable victory against favourites Manchester United. United were without Andy Cole, Andrei Kanchelskis and Eric Cantona for the game, who had notched a combined 41 goals throughout the season. Everton had finally won a trophy for the first time in 8 years and Joe Royle became one of the few English managers to lift the trophy outside of the big 4 domestic sides (Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United).

David Peace has established himself as a prominent literary figure in British Football Writing. His 2006 novel The Damned United explored the controversial manager Brian Clough and his tyrannical spell at Leeds United. His most recent sport novel, Red or Dead, is about Bill Shankly’s managerial reign at Liverpool FC. Now, I know what you’re thinking, what does this have to do with Everton? Well, the derby matches between Liverpool and Everton are arguably the most intense and important in the novel. Everton become a source of fuel for Shankly to fire up his players and the tribal nature of football is evident when these two sides come to blows.
