The Match

Dubbed ‘The Gerrard Final’, Liverpool twice fought back from behind against West Ham United to secure their 7th FA Cup in what was their 13th appearance in the Final, boasting a 50% win ratio. Liverpool started as the masters of their own downfall as Jamie Carragher put the ball in his own net in front of a 71,000 crowd at The Millenium Stadium. Dean Ashton put The Hammers 2 up soon after, only for the deficit to be halved by Djibril Cisse on the stroke of half time. Quickly after the restart Gerrard got his first goal of the match and Liverpool were level until Paul Konchesky put West Ham back in front. The match was in injury time and Liverpool looked to be heading home empty handed until Gerrard unleashed one of his signature strikes from distance on the half volley and sparked The Millenium Stadium back into life. No goals came in extra time and Liverpool came out the other side of the penalty shootout triumphant. The 2006 FA Cup final is widely regarded as one the best final’s in history.
